Wow! Saddening.

That does appear to be what they are suggesting though.

Oh and by the way... Just saw the inscription at the bottom. Are they tryig to imply that a woman is not strong? Advertising agency is stuck in the dark ages IMHO

Alcohol and no contributions.

i feel the need to feign mock offense. what? beer isn't for women? pfft.

If I have to interprete that advert - A Man WAS here' Probably A man that WAS there died after taking Guldermax.

KAYTEE said...

Funmi NOOOO! That is definately not the measure of the highly derided but intelligent sought after Nigerian man. Most of us don't touch mmanya!

Anonymous said...

Nope! I believe you will be objective enough to accept that it is not. Men may have issues but not even every Nigerian man drinks Guinness or even alcohol. It does not make him less of a man if he does not drink.

Anonymous said...

Ooouch! i can imagine....

Anonymous said...

lmao. funmi did you and chude decide to abuse guinness at the same time abi wetin?! i get what they are trying to say sha.

So what? A man was here! To be realistic, leave feminism out of this. Majority of Nigerian men take alcohol i contrast to women. There things 'most men' do, and there things 'most women' do. So this is not any kind of chauvinism as afolabi suggested.

Whats should have been there? A woman was here? gimme a break!

acoholism is not what makes a man...but the measure and lenght of his ideals and his patience.if the re by this undermining womanhood, then they are wrong!

@ all, that billboard was effective in that it was so striking and the message generated everything from fleeting envy (na only men dey drink?) attraction (l love alpha males, shoot me!) and irritation (surely there is more to the Nigerian male than beer guzzling abi?). In the business of selling an unstable iconoclastic usually destructive images, l know that sex, religion, violence and alcohol sells big time and for the naive of mind or knowledge it is a powerful compelling force. l do get the joke but it'll be funnier if one gets other images of Nigerian men also as cool, testoterone driven explorers, inventors, thinkers, fathers, cooks etc..oh heck, l forget, that doesnt sell. The same narrow steroetyping for Nigerian women is true of 9ja men.

BTW that ad is for guilder not guiness, although guiness does have those silly beer parlour "stories of greatness" series.
and CHUDE and l talking similar s£@t?.. little minds think alike :-)

@psuedo-independent, timed out already, where are you?

I think it's a sweet, clean, clear AD campaign. I like it.

If u check that billboard well u will notice that it was at the edge of a gutter,so i am sure they really knew what they were sayin(lol).Maybe some men were really there! Funmi have u come across a lady at her 20's who's as intelligent as u? Im looking for one oh.MY LIFE WILL NEVA REMAIN DSAME AGAIN

by gulder standards, thats the measure of 'their' man. the nigerian man still largely remains undefined especially going by the very own thinking of the nigerian man

funmi,
This is one of the best and most creative advertising copy and art direction i have ever seen in naija.
Its all about the creative platform and not testorone or it being chauvinistic....
I am in the biz of brand mgt on the client side and can place these( the various concepts of the Gulder max outdoor) side by side with the the new thinking around the world.
Not the pedestrian ones you see often.kudos to insight on this one.
It strikes you in a second ,especially the target market.Thats wat it has done.

i think it depicts the strength of a man, just take a bottle of gulder max. i m lovin it

@ tunde on the road, stop this age discrimination oh. e mi nko:-) (blogger translate). There are loads of smart gals in their twenties out there, there just aren't enough platforms on a social level to engage intellectually. Besides the restrictions this society places on girls does not allow for full self expression.

@anonymous, Of course it is a gud ad and the current trend of promoting violent, laddish, sexual predatory behaviour in young men is not limited to Guilder or Nigeria. I have no problem with alcohol consumption but as a person who from age 9 often pulled her now reformed, then alcoholic father out of gutters into his bed being careful to turn him on his side so he doesnt chock on vomit, l know there is nothing manly about alcoholism. it is one of the saddest weakest pictures of a human you can ever see.

Just saw this today. Know what? I'm not offended by the ad in the least. If it suits the ad company to sell this stuff as something only a man would want, then cool. There are all kinds of stereotypes being enforced in the media and I personally think this is one of the less offensive ones.

The ad does not seek to project the Nigerian man as a beer guzzling idiot. Rather, he is supposedly a discerning man who would only drink top of the range lager and has the good sense to stop after that lonely glass sitting on the billboard. Now, wouldn't it be great if our men exercised such good judgment in real life?

Ok, I'll stop before I take over your blog.

ibiluv said...

i agree this is not the way to measure a man

Anonymous said...

damn funmi.u just had to go there.i love d ad. but truth be told uhmm 80% of naija men have pot belles caused by ehhh u knw.so it makes so much sense right.xxx

Iyaeto said...

Sexist!!!!!!! What if it was woman that drank that particular glass of beer? Why should everything evolve around men?
