Full sunlight
This sun is shinning so beautifully bright it blindens. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie won the prestigeous Orange Prize for Half of A Yellow Sun last night. I am joyed, l am chocked. Watch out for this girl people, there will be many more great moments linked to that name.Congratulations babe!
Now get your vocals into this. A singing competition in blogsville? Bright idea from Pink- Satin and Miss Opeke. Even more interesting for me is how we can apply this kind of virtual communality to other areas (l am gleefully rubbing my palms together and lasciviously licking my lips here). Did someone say orange revolution? Easy, down gurl! Lets start with the singing first or at least let others start, can't sing to save my life and have been paid in the past NOT to sing.

I went to Barnes and Noble to try and get a copy of the book, they told me to wait until September before they get copies on their bookshelves. I might have to advance order because everyone has been talking about this book and seeing as her previous literary release was spectacular, I think I am going to just close my eyes and get it.
Nice one Ms Funmi, though i would have loved to hear you sing. I heard there's even a prize for the worst singer...lol!
i am realy proud of chimamanda..i like her two books.she has done well for herslef.....Funmi tanx for the post on the idol competition...we have set up the rules and regulation on the blogville idol page...and we have all our contestants but one...thank you...we appreciate it

such an inspiring young lady. i watched one of her interviews yesterday and i was tickled by her charm. i'm ashamed to say i haven't finished "half" but i did read "purple hibiscus" with much delight.

I agree with you Ms Iyanda...the world needs to pay close attention to Ms Adichie, she is slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with
Its really nice to have someone like Chimamanda out there making waves and doing us proud - she's Nigerian and woman and therefore paving a way for the youth to dream and believe.
Have read her two books and i must say, she's a literary genius.

as much as I am proud of Chimamanda, I must say that she is not as great a writer as the media have made her out to be. Why do I say this? Simply because she is a marketing man's dream, every so often a marketable African writer (not the best, but the most marketable)is foisted upon us as the best thing since sliced bread.
It goes back decades from Amos Tutuola in the fifties and sixties, to Achebe (who is actually deserving, to Ben Okri, to Chimamanda.
I have read all the books by the new age Nigerian writers and the stand out talent amongst them is Helen Oyeyemi who wrote Icarus Girl. Seffi Atta deserves an honourable mention as well.
Chima is a good writer, but she is hardly a Shlink, a Marquez, an Achebe or an Okpi. just my humble view.
Funmi, lets hear you sing, u never know it might just be your hidden talent.
Finally somebody has spoken up regarding Chimanada. I have read both her books and I think they make good reads. I have to agree with Boorish male on this one, I think Helen Oyeyemi, diana evans and Seffi Atta are more talented. Unfortunately, we nigerians only celebrate people when they have won international awards. Seffi Atta is a rising star and we need to look out for her. we need to support and encourage writers like that. let us not fall to media hype surrounding Adichie. I am happy she won the awards, but I am also concerned that in Nigeria she is now used as the yard sticks subsequent writers must follow. She is not and she shouldn't. Compare to all the new emerging Nigerian writers, she is certainly the most media-genic of the lot. She loves the media and actively cultivates them. Perhaps this is something the other writers must take note of.
Achebe is greater than Soyinka...Yerima is not a playwright...Chimamanda isn't so hot...
These are the things that destroy the appreciation of literature. I regard Helen Oyeyemi's "Icarus girl" and Sefi Atta's "Everything Good Will Come" as two of the best things I've ever read but will take nothing away from another creator of a piece of Art. Chimamanda won a great prize, let's just rejoice with her and stop talk like this. One question in Yoruba for those who put her down, "ti e da?"
Helen Oyeyemi and Sefi Atta would never make comments like this which should tell us all something. *sigh*
well her book is cool dou havent seen or gotten a copy before pls about singing hope no kids aroud to avoid faintig know me just joking.
